Coronavirus hits Greek migrant hotel, infects 150

A total of 150 people accommodated at a migrant hotel in Greece, which is operating under the supervision of the International Organization of Migration, have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

According to the country’s Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias, 148 of those are refugees, one is an employee and the other is an aid worker. All were asymptomatic, he noted.

The hotel, located in the town of Kranidi in southern Greece, hosts about 470 asylum seekers, most of whom come from Africa.

The residents were tested after a pregnant woman living in the facility tested positive for the COVID-19 during a visit at the Nafplio Hospital on Sunday.

The hotel has been quarantined since last Thursday after a staff member was confirmed as positive for the novel coronavirus.

A partial curfew has now been imposed on the town of Kranidi, which has a population of around 4,000, banning residents from leaving home from 8pm to 8am for the next 14 days.

Earlier this month, the Malakasa refugee camp, located near Athens, was put under quarantine after an Afghan resident tested positive for the coronavirus, one week after the Ritsona refugee camp on mainland Greece was placed under quarantine measures.

As of publication, Greece has recorded 2,401 coronavirus cases and 121 deaths.
