Marathon is a first-person shooter game first released in 1994 for the Macintosh operating system. The game is developed by his Bungie, creator of such as Halo and Destiny saga, and offers a gaming experience very similar to those two franchises of his on a conceptual level.

Bungie themselves released the code for Marathon 2 in 1999, which led to the development of Aleph One. Aleph One is an open source engine that allows the Marathon trilogy to run flawlessly on modern computers. This engine, Aleph One, is exactly what is used in this version of the game. This, among other things, lets you play around with high resolutions and panoramic formats, as well as customize many other options for both graphics and controls.

Marathon is a great first-person shooter and, for context, came out exactly one year after the original Doom. The game presents a deeper narrative, told almost exclusively through a series of terminals scattered around the spaceship in which the adventure takes place, but with slightly more laid-back action. The results are surprisingly closer to the experience Half-Life will offer years later.

Marathon was one of the great 90’s FPS, and despite being so important in the genre, it’s still relatively unknown. Luckily, thanks to this free and open source version, you can enjoy it on any modern computer, regardless of operating system.
