Sharing files over the internet usually means that you first need to upload them to a hosting service that provides support for public links, extracting the URL and then providing the info to the recipient.

CloudApp, a macOS utility designed for exactly this purpose, is a status bar menu application designed from the get-go to reduce the entire upload process to a simple drag and drop action.

Drag and drop upload

Thus, all you have to do in order to host a file is to drag and drop the music, video or text file you want to share on top of the status bar icon and CloudApp automatically uploads the file to your Cloud account and places the link in your Mac’s clipboard for easy and quick file sharing.

To use the CloudApp application, you must register for a Cloud account: the free account is limited to 10 uploads and day and there is a maximum file size (25MB). For unlimited daily uploads and to be able to upload larger files (up to 250 MB per file) you must purchase the CloudApp Pro plan.

Hot-key enabled plug-ins

Moreover, CloudApp’s capabilities are extended by Raindrops which can be triggered by a keyboard shortcut (the default hotkey can be changed) and, depending on what you are doing, the result are different.

For example, if you are browsing a website in Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari, it will shorten the front window URL and put the result in your clipboard.

If you are selecting a file or folder in a Finder window, CloudApp will start uploading it to your Cloud account. You can see the complete list of actions in the Preferences window.

Essentially, the Raindrops are plug-ins added to the application and developers can use the Raindrop API to add support for additional applications.

Instant and effortless file upload and share

By default, CloudApp can be used to generate private, long links for each new shared item, but, by pressing the Option key, you can easily switch to public, short links. To change the default setting, you must go through the CloudApp web application.

To sum it all up, CloudApp provides you with a quick and intuitive solution for sharing files, folders and links via drag and drop, as long as you are using the CloudApp account for uploading the content online.
