Free, open source Integrated Development Environment for software developers. Java Shell is a new tool included in JDK9 defined in JEP 222 to introduce REPL (Read-Evaluate-Print Loop) capabilities to Java. The tool provides a built-in console user interface for the Java Shell using the capabilities of the application editor. A program can support a tool with a custom project configuration, so the Java Shell is configured to work with the project’s classes and libraries, providing auto-completion out of the box in the editor.

In addition, the application greatly expands the capabilities of the command line tool. Apache NetBeans can execute a wrapper as an agent similar to a debug agent in a debugged or running application (currently only J2SE applications, both Ant-based and Maven-based, are supported). Code snippets written in JShell can be overridden and tested even against running code. When the prototype is ready, it can be saved in the usual Java source file and integrated with the project.
