Layers
Synfig supports many different types of layers; geometric, gradients, filters, distortions, transformations, fractals and more.

Bones
A fully functional skeletal system allows you to create cut animations using bitmaps or manipulate vector graphics. The Skeleton Distortion layer lets you apply complex deformations to a bitmap.

Independent of spatial resolution
Most of the elements are vector and all layers are generated parametrically, so even if the target resolution of the project is changed, pixelation will only occur in imported bitmaps and not in embedded components.

Independence of temporary permission
Animation keyframes are automatically interpolated by the computer, resulting in smooth motion.

High dynamic range imaging (HDRI)
By using floating point math in image calculations, HDRI processing allows canvases to internally understand a much wider range of pixel brightness, resulting in better lighting effects and improved color composition.

Sound support
The tool has basic functionality for syncing your animation to the soundtrack using Sound Layer. Linux users can take full advantage of full featured audio editors thanks to JACK integration.

Artist-centered design
While it may not be obvious at this early stage, Synfig (and its proprietary predecessors) were designed from the ground up with an animation workflow in mind.

Path-based gradients
As opposed to purely SVG based vector software and most consumer-grade animation programs, the application fully supports gradient paths — gradients that follow a drawn shape. This allows artists to easily add soft shading to animation without having to paint it every frame.
