Planet Centauri is a 2D sandbox game that’s teeming with potential like you rarely get to see. It rocks very good pixel art graphics, crafting, tough monsters to fight and gameplay to which in-depth seems to be an understatement.

The standard things plus new and very cool stuff

Planet Centauri is, at first, the rudimentary 2D sandbox game. You’re left on a planet, alone, accompanied only by an axe and a pickaxe, with which you start to build your survival strategy. Digging and chopping trees are as standard as they get but along the way, in a short time, you start to see the game branch out to different ideas.

For example, chopping off a zombie’s head allows you to wear it, mostly for fashion reasons. There are also some strange boxes that can be found lying on the ground and you can open them only after you kill a certain number of hostiles.

The most impressive thing about Planet Centauri is the evolution feature. You start off digging in the dirt and can end up shooting fireballs or driving a badass robot with large caliber bullets and rocket launchers. It takes a lot of work and exploration but no one really complains about a sandbox game being too big.

It’s almost epic, but it also needs a lot of work

From the demo, you’ll get to see how good the game looks and handles, and how annoying it can get. Building is easy enough, except for when it comes to placing doors; this game seriously needs to implement a tutorial for the sandbox newcomers.

Fighting in your house is nice and a lot of the time you’ll find yourself destroying your own furniture. However, this is not in all honesty a design flaw. I’d like you see you fighting a mutant in your house and not breaking at least one chair. None the less, the fighting is very one sided when it comes to the thrill, there’s almost none of it, in the beginning at least.

Something to look forward to

The game features tons of good stuff, and once it’s complete, it will thrill a lot of people, that’s for sure. Planet Centauri is a well-crafted game at its core, and the fact that it still needs to figure some things out, well, that’s something all games go through.

Nonetheless, it’s a great game in the making. Give the demo a world and if you get some positive vibes, or not, feel free to drop over at the Planet Centauri Kickstarter page to show your support or to share some feedback.
