MEPs call for protection of farmers in Farm to Fork strategy

MEPs call for protection of farmers under Farm to Fork 2 strategy

During a debate on Monday with EU health chief Stella Kyriakides on the future of agriculture in the post era -coronavirus, several MEPs called for a realistic strategy that will offer farmers incentives instead of additional requirements, in order to promote sustainable and viable agricultural production.

Members of the European Parliament's agriculture committee warned that reducing the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers could seriously affect food production in Europe, if no alternatives were found.

However, they obtained the Commissioner's assurance that an impact assessment will be carried out and that "concrete and ambitious targets" will be set.

The debate with the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety also focused on the ongoing reforms of the common agricultural policy (CAP) and the long-term budget of the bloc. At their last emergency summit, the heads of state and government disagreed over the allocation of European funds and the cuts in agriculture.

The European Commission is expected to present its farm-to-fork strategy on May 20, later than originally planned, due to the coronavirus epidemic which has forced several consultations to be delayed.
