OpenAI recently introduced Whisper, a speech recognition system that can be used to accurately transcribe audio. It relies on a large and diverse dataset and aims to ensure more reliable recognition of natural speech. It supports dozens of languages ​​and even does instant translations.

Whisper is indeed impressive. Its ability to accurately detect language from less-than-ideal sources, its ability to apply correct punctuation and organize text into paragraphs makes you wonder how good AI can be.

After importing English and French audio (not recent or high-quality recordings), I found few errors. Punctuation sometimes differs from human transcription but is grammatically incorrect.

It can also take audio in any supported language and translate it to English when transcribing. The potential uses for this technology are nearly endless.

User-friendly Whisper frontend

Aiko makes it very easy to leverage OpenAI’s systems. You can load audio or video files and wait for the app to transcribe them, or simply start recording your voice with the microphone. The language is detected automatically, but you can also choose it yourself.

After the transcription is complete, you can copy the text to the clipboard or export it. Editing is not supported and you cannot add to completed transcriptions. If you want to record something else, you have to start over.

There are a couple of niggles that can be fixed. First, while automatic translation can be disabled, we encountered a situation that was inevitable. If a file’s audio is mostly in a different language, but it begins in English, all non-English text will also be translated, regardless of the app’s settings.

Second, transcription of microphone audio could be improved. There’s no way to pause the recording, and if you stop transcription to take a break, you won’t be able to pick up where you left off. You must save the transcribed text and start a new recording. Also, the ability to preview the transcribed text would be helpful.

Overall, Aiko is a great way to access OpenAI’s Whisper functionality on a Mac. It’s not a perfect app, but it’s well designed. It also works completely offline and is completely free as it does not depend on the Whisper API – the entire model is contained and accessible in your own storage.
