The MacBook Pro M1 (and newer models) comes with an XDR display with HDR capabilities. This means it’s capable of much higher brightness than a regular display, but this extra brightness is normally only used when displaying HDR content. This technology enables a higher range of luminosity between the darkest and brightest areas.
BrightIntosh is an open-source app that makes it possible to access the additional HDR brightness at any time. The end result is that everything you see on your display will be much more luminous, though you should avoid using this feature when viewing HDR content.
The extra brightness can be enabled and tweaked from the menu bar or via hotkeys. If you access the app’s settings, you can also change the default keyboard shortcuts for toggling, increasing, or decreasing brightness. Additionally, you can configure the app to automatically disable the increased brightness when the battery level is low.

There is also an alternative method of increasing the screen’s brightness, using an overlay. This should result in more accurate colors, but it won’t be active in Mission Control or when switching Spaces, and it will interfere with the screenshot tool, making it impossible to select anything other than the overlay.
