Creating a stable budget and tracking it isn’t easy, especially when you have so many other things to do. There are many financial planning apps you can use, but if they don’t display the necessary information in an intuitive way, they aren’t much help after all.

budget calendar is a useful Mac utility that takes a slightly different approach, as most of your planning is done while viewing a monthly calendar detailing all transactions and any additional notes.

The first thing you notice when launching the application is of course the monthly calendar for all data entry and visualization operations.

You can view all transactions related to a specific date, the current status of the budget, and any notes you feel appropriate to attach.

Inserting financial data is not difficult, but it would be helpful if it could be simplified somewhat, as we feel new entries could be added faster if the procedure is rethought. For example, you can’t use keyboard keys to navigate between dates or use shortcut keys to activate various functions.

Additionally, the application is installed without any project or category templates. These will make it easier to import all your financial data, as a large group of people tend to have very similar income sources and payment destinations.

Budget Calendar is a Java-based application with a rather outdated interface. While it’s possible to change color schemes and fonts, it’s not a particularly simple operation. Additionally, even though you can assign specific icons to each entry, their visual design isn’t very modern, and you can’t create new icons.

Putting aside the aesthetics of the app (which some users may not have any issues with), it’s hard to understand why some of the menu names aren’t capitalized, as it makes the Budget Calendar look rather unprofessional.

Overall, Budget Calendar is an easy-to-use application that can help you manage your personal finances using your Mac as it offers a nice set of features. However, it’s quite cumbersome to use on a day-to-day basis, and has an interface that’s quite unusual for OS X apps.
