Clamshell Mode on MacBooks is designed to allow you to use the device with the lid closed while an external display is connected. This is all great, but the problem is that it only works when the laptop is connected to a power adapter. If it’s running on battery, it just goes into sleep mode.

valve is a relatively simple open-source application that aims to solve this problem. It’s especially useful on Apple Silicon Macs, as their fairly long battery life means they’re very capable of powering an external display for extended periods of time.

When running the application for the first time, you can choose to configure set up Utility that allows Clapet to enable or disable sleep mode without asking for your password each time. If you skip this initial step, you can install it later from the app’s settings.

Once everything is installed, sleep mode should automatically disable whenever you connect an external display on battery. You can also enable or disable it manually, and you can set an inactivity delay to put your MacBook to sleep when no input is detected for a given amount of time. Finally, you can customize menu options, set hotkeys, and manage notifications.
