The Finder can do a lot of things, but it doesn’t help you manage multiple folders very well. If you need to compare the contents of two directories, you really need to find a third-party app to make the job easier.

equal direction That’s one such app. It’s very professional and allows you to see the differences between two folders in great detail. These are highlighted with colors and icons, and you can perform a mirror synchronization of the directory.

Very intuitive folder comparison tool

To get started, either browse to the location of the target folders, or place them in the specified fields. The UI is divided into two panels, one for each directory. Then just run the compare tool and see the differences in the main window.

The app makes it easy to tell if something is missing in either folder, and if the files or folders are of different sizes. You can also choose to compare file contents for absolute certainty, but this will slow down processing.

Manage folders and sync content

After comparing the directories, you can try to handle the problem manually. Click the dot next to a file to copy it to another folder, or hold down Shift (⇧) or option (⌥) to set the action to copy as or delete. Then, click Execute to run the action.

Alternatively, you can speed up the process by running a mirror sync. This process copies missing or modified files from one folder to another, while also removing extra files from the destination directory. This will make the contents of both folders the same.

DirEqual is very good at its job and it manages to make the process very intuitive. If you need to compare and sync folders for any reason, especially if user input is preferred, you can’t go wrong with this app.
