elephant is a GUI wrapper for the PNG2icons application, its purpose is to provide you with an easy way to create icons for Windows and macOS applications and projects.

What’s more, this small cross-platform application (available for Windows 10 and macOS) allows you to generate Apple ICNS and Microsoft ICO files from PNG format directly on your computer desktop.

Using Elephicon is like a walk in the park: you just drag and drop a PNG onto the application’s GUI, select the desired output format, and that’s it. Once the process is complete, you will see a message showing the name and location (desktop) of the output file.

Although it is very easy to use, it is worth noting that the ideal input is a 24-bit PNG with an alpha channel (RGBA) of 1024×1024 pixels. Of course, other sizes and other PNG-related formats will still work, but the results may not be as bad. Also, if you are only interested in generating ICO files, then 256×256 pixels will be enough.

If you want to tweak the results slightly, press the Alt button on your keyboard and the typical menu bar will appear at the top of the application’s minimalist GUI.

You can choose from three quality settings – low, medium and high, and also adjust the ICO output behavior. For example, you can use BMP format for smaller icon sizes, or PNG format for each icon in the ICO file you create.

Although lightweight and minimalistic, Elephicon is a very good application. It’s modern, looks great, is fast, and is very user-friendly, so no matter who you are and no matter how inexperienced you are with such applications, you should be able to generate ICO and ICNS files without any trouble.
