Overview of the latest version of Rufus

Rufus is a small, simple tool for creating bootable USB drives from Pete Batard. Great for creating bootable operating system from ISO file (IMG). It is a tool that helps to format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys / hangers, memory sticks, etc. It helps under the following conditions:

  • Create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.)
  • Flashing a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
  • Works on a system that does not have an operating system installed
  • Runs a tool at a low level

How to use Rufus

1- Download the executable file and run it – no installation is required.

# The executable file is digitally signed and the signature should indicate:

“Akeo Consulting” (v1.3.0 or later)
“Pete Batard – Open Source Developer” (v1.2.0 or earlier)

2- Notes on DOS support:

If you create a bootable DOS drive and use a non-US keyboard, Rufus will try to select a keyboard layout according to the system location. In this case, FreeDOS, which is the default choice, is recommended over MS-DOS, as it supports multiple keyboard layouts.

3- Notes on ISO support:

All versions of Rufus since v1.1.0 allow the creation of a bootable USB from an ISO image (.iso).

However, creating an ISO image from a physical disc or from a set of files is very easy to do, using a CD burning program, such as the freely available CDBurnerXP or ImgBurn.

4- UEFI and GPT Support Notes:

Since version 1.3.2, Rufus supports both UEFI and GPT for installation media, which means you can install Windows 7, Windows 8 or Linux in full EFI mode.

However, Windows Vista or later requires full UEFI / GPT support. Due to operating system limitations, Windows XP limits the creation of UEFI bootable drives to MBR mode.
