If you use a lot of different audio devices, such as multiple pairs of headphones, separate microphones, or even built-in speakers, switching between them isn’t always as smooth or fast as we’d like.

ear is a clever app that helps you manage all of these audio devices as efficiently as possible. It aims to make the process near instant by using the keyboard and hotkeys, while automating as much of the process as possible.

Select an audio device using the keyboard

First, you can set a keyboard shortcut to bring up the main application window. From here, use the up/down and left/right arrow keys to navigate between devices and select the correct one. When you’re done, just press Enter to close the window.

But you can go further. If you have Bluetooth headphones, you can designate any of them as a favorite, set a hotkey for them, and instantly connect to them with one easy shortcut.

Link devices, set volume and mute microphone

There are some devices that work better together, such as a good pair of headphones and a table mic, which are much better than what’s built into the headphones. To use them more easily, you can link two devices and select them at the same time.

For each output device, you can set a preferred default volume when switching to them. This feature can help you optimize the volume of speakers and headphones with different amplification levels.

Finally, there’s a built-in hotkey that instantly mutes your microphone, no matter which app it’s being used in. This means you will no longer have to remember hotkeys for each application, as Ears will disable all microphone input directly from your macOS preferences.
