Despite all the apps and tracking tools we have at our disposal, managing money is as difficult as ever. The more features an app offers, the more complicated it makes an already confusing process.

Growly Checkbook is a finance tracker that’s meant to be as simple as possible. It has a very simple UI, with just two tabs for your checking and savings accounts, quick data input, and a way for you to reconcile what you think you have with what the bank says you have.

Start adding transactions

It might not be immediately obvious how you add new transactions, since it is all handled via hotkeys. Press ⌘E for a new transaction, and ⌘T for a new transfer. Enter the transaction type, description, and amount, and move to the next one.

When typing in the Description field, the app can provide suggestions based on what you’ve already added in the past. This can make data entry quicker if you often shop in the same places.

Manage savings and balance the books

You can transfer funds from your Checking to your Savings account at any time, and vice versa. You can also create new transactions in the Savings tab directly. Both accounts have their own balances and are reconciled separately.

Reconciliation allows you to figure out where the differences lie between what your records show and what a bank statement says. When you get to the same balance, everything checks out.

Simple and efficient

A free financial app is always popular, since spending money isn’t the best way to save money. Growly Checkbook doesn’t cost anything, and while it comes with relatively few features, it has everything you need to help you manage your finances.

A keyboard-based workflow is generally more efficient, and the tidy, minimalistic interface ensures you won’t get lost in the details when crunching the numbers.
