Working with people on the other side of the world is not uncommon these days, and creating the best schedule for tasks and meetings can be tricky. Time zones are hard to perceive intuitively, so it’s helpful to have a tool that allows you to visualize time zones.

Hofley is an open source menu bar application that allows you to monitor the time in various locations in a very straightforward manner. It’s minimal and easy to use, and even includes a helpful slider for advancing time and checking the availability of all team members.

Add locations and track timezones from the menu bar

Several locations are added by default, you can add a new location simply by typing the name in the search box and pressing Enter. To delete an entry, simply click the button that appears when you hover over the entry.

While all locations are visible in the main window, only the locations you select will appear in the menu bar. This allows you to exclude time zones that do not need to be monitored at all times. Location names can be displayed in full or abbreviated form, and times can be displayed in 24-hour or AM/PM format.

Check availability when scheduling

A particularly useful feature is a slider that can be used to advance or rewind time by up to 12 hours, allowing you to view the time in different locations relative to your city.

Graphics are used to indicate whether each area is day or night, but it would be helpful if the intervals could be customized. Also, a nice optional feature is indicators that highlight office hours for each location, which will help with scheduling meetings.

Simple yet effective application in a sizeable package

Hovrly does a great job, and it’s completely free and open source. Apart from some potential new features, the only aspect worth mentioning is that it’s an Electron-based application. This isn’t necessarily a deal breaker, but it does lead to a relatively simple application using a lot of disk space, and less than ideal resource management.
