Whether you don’t have access to your own computer or need help from a friend or family member who has forgotten their Windows password, there may be times when you need to reset a lost Windows password. It’s pretty easy if you have a startup disk like PCUnlocker. This tutorial will walk you through the process of creating a PCUnlocker Live CD and booting your computer from CD to reset forgotten Windows 10/8/7 password easily.

Creating a bootable CD with PCUnlocker

The first thing to do is download the ZIP file for PCUnlocker using another computer that you have access to. Then extract the contents of the ZIP file to a folder on your hard drive. Open the unzipped folder in Windows Explorer and you will see an ISO file called pcunlocker.iso that you need to burn to a CD (or USB).

To create a bootable CD (or USB drive) from this ISO file, I will use the free ISO2Disc. Insert a blank CD and open ISO2Disc, navigate to the ISO file in the unpacked files. Select “Burn to CD / DVD” and click Start recording.

This will create a bootable PCUnlocker CD in a few minutes. Caution: If you don’t have a blank CD nearby, you can create a bootable USB PCUnlocker instead.

Boot from the CD

Once you have the PCUnlocker bootable CD, insert it into the computer whose password you want to reset. As soon as the computer is turned on, press a system-defined key (for example, F12, ESC, DEL, F2) to access the BIOS. Go to the BOOT menu and set CD / DVD as the first boot option.

After changing the boot priority, save the BIOS settings and restart the computer. It should now boot from the PCUnlocker CD.

Reset forgotten Windows password

When booted from the CD, PCUnlocker will find the Windows operating systems that were installed on the hard drive. Select one of your user accounts from the list and click Reset your password to continue.

This will open the Change Password dialog box, allowing you to enter a new password or leave it blank to remove the password. If you selected a local account that was linked to a Microsoft account, you’ll get a warning that the program will convert your Microsoft account back to a local user.

After click okayYour Windows password will be reset immediately. Restart the computer and undo the changes made to the BIOS. Then you can log back into Windows with your new password!

PCUnlocker has three versions available for download – Standard, Pro and Enterprise. if you want to reset a forgotten Windows password PCUnlocker Enterprise must be used on a computer with UEFI Secure Boot enabled.
