Apple’s Shortcuts app is an amazing tool, but it lacks the ability to automate actions based on certain triggers. The upside is the presence of third-party apps that can replace shortcuts or simply extend their functionality.

keyboard cowboy Lets you do some of the things Shortcuts are capable of, but most importantly, it allows you to define triggers for auto-launch actions, or even commands from the Shortcuts application. Together, these two utilities form a powerful combination.

You can open or close applications, open URLs, trigger key combinations, run actions from shortcuts, start scripts, type text or just launch system commands. Multiple actions can run concurrently or sequentially as part of a single workflow.

The easiest way to trigger these workflows is via keyboard shortcuts. These are easy to define and you can enable or disable any workflow or certain commands within a workflow.

The most important feature of the application is its ability to automatically run workflows when certain conditions are met. These are all linked to one or more apps and can be triggered when apps start, close or switch.

Keyboard Cowboy’s automation tools give you a fair degree of flexibility, although having application-agnostic triggers can also help.

Organize workflows into groups and configurations

When creating a group, you can specify whether the workflows contained in the group should only be active when an application is brought to the front. This allows you to restrict shortcuts to specific applications instead of making them global.

To quickly switch between multiple groups, you can create multiple configurations. Currently, these settings cannot be renamed afterwards.

Keyboard Cowboy is a very useful tool for automating and creating shortcuts, especially if you’re looking for a way to trigger actions based on application activity. It works with Shortcuts and is free and open source.
