LazPaint is a free and open source image editing program developed by Circular along with other members of the Lazarus community. LazPaint is written in the Free Pascal programming language using the Lazarus IDE and includes basic editing features such as layer support and transparency.

Availability

Lazpaint is available for Windows, Linux and MacOS X. There is also a portable version for Windows that requires no installation.

Lazpaint supports the OpenRaster file format, which allows you to export and process multi-layered images. This provides file support for other image editing programs such as GIMP, Krita and MyPaint. The Photoshop file format can be imported, but only as a flat image.

Interface

LazPaint has a simple interface. The Toolbox, Layers, and Colors windows can be docked and undocked to surround the canvas. However, joining them together will result in an unpolished appearance and design. If windows are docked, the canvas will always be maximized.

Functions

This application has very simple features. The only advanced feature it has as an editing app is transparency and layer support. However, LazPaint can import 3D models in the Wavefront Object file format. However, the lack of brush customization, texture support, and powerful transformation tools makes the app a bit limited compared to other image editors.

Limited in use

LazPaint would be too simple for professionals and unnecessarily ineffective for beginners. Transparency and layer support can be nice features, but the limited number of brushes and transform tools can be a little limiting. At the very least, LazPaint is a good demo of the Lazarus IDE, the Pascal language, and the BGRABitmap graphics library.
