WinDiskWriter is an open source application designed to help you create a bootable Windows USB from macOS. It has a lightweight design, supports numerous operating system versions, and allows you to eliminate Windows 11 installation requirements, namely TPM, Secure Boot, and minimum RAM.

If you’ve never created a bootable Windows USB before, the process may seem very simple. Assuming you already have the installation ISO file, just point the application to it, select your USB drive, and start writing.

Since the file size of the FAT32 file system is limited to a maximum of 4GB, WinDiskWriter will split install.wim Automatically file to allow copying.Plan supports splitting .esd and less commonly used system images.

Windows 11 makes many systems obsolete upon release, but its requirements can be bypassed. When creating a bootable USB, you have the option to remove TPM, RAM, and Secure Boot requirements, allowing you to install Windows on systems that are not officially supported.

Another planned feature will eliminate the requirement for an online account during installation, making it easier to use local accounts. Hopefully this will be implemented soon.

If you are dealing with older firmware that does not support EFI boot, you can install a legacy BIOS boot sector to allow the older machine to use the drive. The application also adds EFI support for Windows 7 and Vista.

WinDiskWriter is an excellent bootable drive creation tool. If you don’t have a Windows PC available or prefer to work on a Mac, it will allow you to easily create a bootable drive, and it offers quite a few features, although not as many as something like Rufus. Thankfully, many other features are in development, so keep an eye out.
