If you don’t like complex journal applications with a lot of useless features and almost always cloud-based, then a simple text processor seems to be a better choice. But of course, this makes organizing journals extremely difficult, so there may be a middle ground.

Link It is an open source application designed to provide this, but there is still a long way to go. Designed as a minimalist daily report, simple to use, localized, and keyboardized, but it still lacks many useful functions.

Simple diary app for multiple platforms

The first thing worth mentioning is that this is an Electron-based application, which is obviously not ideal. However, if you can ignore this flaw, you can discover considerable potential, and it also makes Windows and Linux support easier to achieve.

On the surface, linked looks simple, but it does seem to be designed for advanced users. It is designed to use keyboard shortcuts for navigation, it provides support for the Markdown format, and the lack of synchronization means users have to handle the migration themselves.

Only basic functions are currently available

There is not much work to be done in this early development stage. You can add notes every day, navigate between them, and use the built-in formatting tools. There are dark and light color modes, and non-customizable navigation keyboard shortcuts.

Among the missing features, we can mention the search function, monthly navigation, tabs and optional synchronization. You can also choose to send the application to the menu bar and add notes without displaying the main UI.

Open source projects worth watching

Unless you are passionate about helping with testing and development, or don’t mind the lack of important features, links may not replace your current diary application. However, it may be an excellent alternative to overly complex and expensive software in the future.
