There are many translation tools available online to help you render text into various languages, but all require a web browser. Companion translation (before instant translation) is a minimalist macOS app that provides the same functionality in the status bar.

Translation tools that require an internet connection

Although Mate Translate is a standalone macOS app, the translation process takes place online, so an internet connection is always required.

The Mate Translate utility, on the other hand, lives in the status bar, and you can access its interface through the associated menu or using system-wide user-defined hotkeys.

In the Mate Translate app, you can easily set it to automatically detect the source language, and then manually select the translation target.

Of course, you can also choose the source language yourself, in case automatic detection cannot accurately select it.

Listen to text pronunciation and manage your history log

Mate Translate is able to read both the original text and the target translation aloud: just press the volume buttons associated with both text boxes.

The Mate Translate app automatically hides the translation panel if you click your mouse anywhere else on the desktop, but you can also choose to pin it to the screen and move it around more easily.

Other customization options include the ability to define system-wide hotkeys for faster access to Mate Translate, enable smart translation features, and toggle the history feature. Mate Translate keeps a record of all your translations by default, and you can easily manage your entries through the History tab.

All in all, Mate Translate streamlines the process by leveraging an online service that lets you translate text between 90 different languages, while allowing you to perform tasks from the comfort of the status bar.
