With these tools one can get information about (mkvinfo) Matroska files, extract tracks/data from (mkvextract) Matroska files and create (mkvmerge) Matroska files from other media files. Matroska is a new multimedia file format that aims to be the new container format of the future. You can find more information about it and its underlying technology, Extensible Binary Meta Language (EBML), at https://www.matroska.org/

What is new

Important notes

  • mkvmerge: removed –blockadd option. Removal of block append data is no longer possible, as it is often required for proper decoding. Part of the implementation of #3511.

New features and improvements

  • mkvmerge: JSON file identification: added a child element called num_index_entries to the property track element that contains the number of index entries found for a track. Currently only implemented for Matroska files where it contains the number of signal points. See #3510.
  • mkvmerge: the maximum block addition ID track header is now automatically calculated from both existing mappings and the actually used block additions in the block groups. Part of the implementation of #3511.
  • mkvmerge: Matroska reader: when reading WebM files that use block extensions with ID 4 (HDR for VP9), an appropriate block addition mapping is created automatically. Part of the implementation of #3511.
  • mkvmerge: MP4 reader: the title/movie name metadata (the contents of the udta.meta.ilst.©nam atom) will now be copied over as the segment title track’s header attribute. Part of the implementation of #3475.
  • mkvmerge: MP4 reader: comment and encoder metadata (the contents of the udta.meta.ilst.©cmt & ….©too atoms) will now be copied over as global tags COMMENT & ENCODER respectively. Part of the implementation of #3475.
  • mkvmerge, MKVToolNix GUI’s multiplexer: added an option to stop processing after the primary video track ends called –stop-after-video-ends. This discards any remaining packets with other tracks. Part of implementation #3506.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: on Windows only: GUI now uses Qt’s “Fusion” style instead of the outdated “Windows Vista” style. The advantage is that as of Qt 6.5, the “Fusion” style supports Windows 10 and 11’s dark application mode. The Windows binaries are now built with said Qt version. Therefore, the option to disable dark mode has been removed. Dishes #3264 and probably others.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: multiplexer: automatic setting of the destination file name: added an option in the settings to use the first source file’s directory name instead of the file name as the basis of the destination file name. Tool #3512.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: multiplexer: double-clicking on certain columns in the “track” view will now switch them directly (“Default Track” and “Forced Track” columns) or activate the corresponding control (“Language”, “Name” and “Delay” columns) . Double-clicking other columns will also do what they have done before: toggle the “Copy Element” state. Implements #3513 and others.
  • MKVToolNix GUI: the language tag editing dialog is now only created the first time the user wants to edit a language tag and cached afterwards instead of creating a new instance each time. This makes subsequent use instantaneous.

Error corrections

  • mkvmerge: mkvmerge will now only attempt to search for VobSubs if the name of the file to be identified ends in either .idx or .sub, preventing misidentification of other file types if VobSubs with the same base name exist in the same directory. Dishes #3508.
  • mkvmerge: AC-3: mkvmerge will now skip certain types of junk data (16 bytes starting with 0x01 0x10) that may occur before each sync frame, and fix the file not being identified as AC-3. Dishes #3484.
  • mkvmerge: Matroska reader: when reading files using block additions with IDs other than 1 (eg 4 for HDR for VP9) the IDs will now be kept and written to the output file. Before no ID was written, you actually use 1, as that is the default value for the corresponding element. Part of the implementation of #3511.
  • mkvmerge: mkvmerge will no longer write block addition mappings or the max block addition ID track header elements when creating a WebM file, as these elements are not supported there. Part of the implementation of #3511.
  • mkvpropedit: fixed replacing chapters and tags in files that do not contain tracks. Dishes #3498.
