The Microsoft Office suite covers a wide range of needs, from writing and presentations to spreadsheets and cloud backup. The company’s solutions do seem to be all-encompassing. But if you want to use the corresponding application, most of them are paid software.

A web version is also available, free for everyone with a Microsoft account. But it’s not the most convenient since you can only access it through a browser. MS 365 – Electronics was built to meet this need: a network version of the Office suite in a single program.

It’s an aptly named app, and that’s it. The software is built with Electron and provides browser-like access to the Web MS Office suite. Therefore, all features offered by this version of the Microsoft product line are available: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc., can all be used for free and to their full potential, just like in the browser.

First, you must log in to your Microsoft account. After synchronization, you will be able to access documents you left on the web version directly in this application.

Other conveniences are also open to you: the mail client Outlook can be used without problems, as can Microsoft’s cloud solution OneDrive. To Do and OneNote also exist. Not only that, Teams is here too, making it easy to meet up with your contacts.

We found that middle-clicking on new items with the mouse is the best way to use this application. By opening separate windows, you can work on Word documents and Excel spreadsheets while checking your Outlook inbox.

In fact, it is built in Electron, with the usual benefits and caveats. This is a cross-platform application that takes advantage of software frameworks, but one of the weaknesses here is the rather resource-intensive nature, which is common to programs built in this way.

Essentially, Electron-based apps mimic browsers in that they are almost… mini-browsers capable of being repurposed into various programs.

In summary

MS 365 – Electron is a handy app and it really scores high when it comes to convenience. The Electron framework has its pros and cons, but for what it’s worth, it’s nice to see a program like this exist.
