Mumble was the first VoIP application to establish low-latency voice communication over a decade ago. But low latency and gaming aren’t the only use cases in which it shines.

We heard from users recording podcasts with our multi-channel audio recorder, gamers seeking realism with our in-game positional audio, Eve Online players with huge communities of over 100 simultaneous voices (I bet they make good use of our extensive permission system 🠘 „), the competitive Team Fortress 2 community that makes us their necessary voice communication platform, hobby radio transmission users and a variety of workplaces that adapt Mumble to their needs – whether it’s mobile devices on their heads or communication across countries or to airplanes.

Administrators appreciate Mumble for being able to self-host and be in control of data security and privacy. Some use the comprehensive permission system for complex scenarios (for example, separating two groups, but managers can talk to both). Some people like to give their users extra functionality with scripts that use server APIs, or host music bots and the like that connect to the server. Those with an existing user database often use authentication to allow authentication with existing account credentials.

Characteristics

Different user groups are interested in different functions, and therefore we describe some of the functions specific to each type of user.

For end users

  • Mumble client
  • Connected to a server
  • Public server list
  • Low latency – great for talking and gaming
  • Stay private and secure
  • always encrypted communication
  • Public/private key authentication by default
  • Recognize friends across servers

For players:

  • In-game overlays – see who’s talking, FPS and current time
  • Positional audio – hear players from where they are in the game
  • Wizards that guide you through setup, such as configuring the microphone

To get started, simply download, install and launch Mumble and connect to a public server, or a specific server you know of.

For administrators

  • Libre software – no licensing issues, caveats and limitations
  • Open source – open in security and technology, and open to extensibility
  • Comprehensive User Permission System (ACL)
  • Extensible through Ice protocols
  • Web interface – free choice of several common free software projects
  • Channel viewers – even without direct Ice access, if the host provides the CVP, you can easily configure the selected channel viewer
  • Authentications – to allow users to authenticate against an existing user database
  • Custom chat commands and context (right-click) menu entries

For configuration options, see Murmur.ini and our documentation on third-party management software, scripts, and bots.

For hosting

  • Free software – no licensing issues or costs
  • Automatic management through Ice middleware
  • Low resource cost for hosting
  • Very stable server software
  • Free choice between official and third-party server software
  • Custom web interfaces for users through Ice
  • Or host one of the available free software web interfaces
  • Give users channel viewer data (CVP) without giving away control
  • Or empower users by offering the Ice interface

What is new

Almost two years after the previous stable release Mumble 1.4.287, many changes have been made to the codebase. With this update, you’re sure to notice some lingering bugs that have been fixed, as well as some practical changes that were long overdue. In the time between the major versions, the project has passed 10,000 commits and now has over 350 contributors. Thanks to all of you who have contributed, translated, submitted builds, and tested pre-releases! Without you, the Mumble project would not be possible on this scale.
