Oxford English Dictionary is the simple Mac version of the famous Oxford English Monolingual Dictionary. This edition was last revised and updated in 2010, and it included most of the new words that were born that year.

The Oxford English Dictionary app provides a huge collection of word definitions; you get 350,000 words, meanings and phrases, 75,000 high-quality audio pronunciations and phonetic transcriptions of all words, 67,000 usage examples, 11,000 encyclopedic definitions, and 550 usage note.

Also, the Oxford English Dictionary has a less impressive user interface and functionality. The main window is intuitive and consists of a search bar, back/forward navigation buttons, a panel listing all words, and of course the explanation area.

Searching for words made easy with patterns

Despite the plain-looking interface, most word entries include a color-coded format based on the word’s function. For example, usage examples are light green and italic, and usage instructions appear in yellow rectangles.

In terms of functionality, Oxford English Dictionary offers the ability to bookmark favorite words, search patterns or full text, view spelling suggestions, and offers the ability to look up words in other Mac applications.

Extensive and comprehensive English dictionary for Mac

All in all, the Oxford English Dictionary may not actually be the most comprehensive electronic dictionary available on macOS, but it still contains a ton of words and meanings.

Despite the not-so-impressive GUI, the Oxford English Dictionary app is actually easy to navigate and responsive because it works offline.
