If you install and uninstall a lot of apps, you’ll need some way to delete the files they leave behind. Most applications create additional files outside of the Applications folder, and these files are usually not deleted when the application is sent to the Trash.

Pearcleaner is an open source tool that can help you solve this problem. When the app is deleted, it searches for related files and gives you the option to delete them. It’s very simple to use, but it does have some flaws at the moment.

Get rid of app residue easily

There are several ways to use the application. First, you just open the main window, browse the application collection, and uninstall them from there. Second, you can drag and drop applications onto the Pearcleaner Dock icon. Finally, the Sentinel feature monitors software in the junk folder and automatically launches a leftover removal process.

Whichever way you choose, the process is simple. You can check the files that the application has recognized and deselect the ones you want to keep. There is also a mini UI mode that takes up less space on your desktop.

Problems such as deleting wrong files are prone to occur

Pearcleaner uses a combination of the application’s bundle ID and the application name to find associated files. Unfortunately, this can lead to some cases of mistaken identity. When uninstalling Logitech G HUB, it also attempts to remove GarageBand’s Application support/logic folder, files from many other applications were also selected when uninstalling Text Case.

There are other problems. There is no way to delete multiple apps at once, just like AppCleaner, remaining files are not ranked by confidence, and dragging and dropping apps onto the Dock icon with Mini UI mode activated does not display their details correctly.

A promising open source application cleaner, but not quite ready yet

Currently, Pearcleaner has some major issues, the biggest of which is that it sometimes overextends itself when looking for relevant files to delete. If these issues are resolved, it could be an open source replacement for AppCleaner, but you’re better off using the latter for now.
