If you’ve ever tried to troubleshoot a network without administrative privileges, you’re probably aware of the number of challenges presented by not being able to access all the components between systems, especially routers and firewalls. Monitoring becomes more difficult as your traffic leaves the network and you have less visibility into what’s happening on the wire.

Part of Microsoft’s Sysinternals package, PsPing is a lightweight tool that allows you to perform various latency and bandwidth tests over TCP and UDP connections.

It uses a syntax similar to PING and outputs

Similar to the classic command, the tool sends five pings to determine if the connection is up and running. In addition, it displays each response time with high precision statistics. However, the difference is that ping is measured by 10^-5, unlike ping which uses 10^-3, it provides histogram, iteration, interval control, payload and non-stop, with the same functions of IPv4 and IPv5 .

For example, if you want to test TCP to check the service, you can choose a specific port, the default port is 80. So if you want to confirm that the target is up, just run the test and append :80.

Determining Latency and Bandwidth Testing

If you control both the client and the server, then you can start a listening service and connect it to the other side, and you can even check the latency of the connection. Finally, if you want to know more about how much data can be passed between A and B, you can do so by using a test of 5000 packets of 8000 bytes each with the server and a specified TCP port as Target.

PsPing might come in handy if you want to perform a quick test to see if the connection service is working properly when ICMP is blocked by a firewall or you don’t have administrative rights.
