Some keys don’t get enough love, like the modifiers on the right side of the keyboard. Rarely used, they can be repurposed with unique features that might actually earn them some keys.

Order Takes the Command key right and gives it new functionality: Replaces Command-Tab by allowing you to switch between apps with a dynamic hotkey based on each app name. It also allows you to create static shortcuts, launch applications, hide them and more.

Intuitive app switcher with hotkeys you won’t have to remember

The core functionality of rcmd is to allow you to switch to any open application with the correct combination of the Cmd key and the first letter of the application name. This means that you will always intuitively know what hotkey is required to switch to a particular application.

Of course, the names of multiple applications may start with the same letter. In this case, the first use of the hotkey will take you to the most recently active app, and the next use will switch to the next one.

Create a static hotkey and launch the application

Another way to manage application names that start with the same letter is to create different static hotkeys for applications with conflicting names. This can be done directly with a keyboard shortcut while the application is in focus: just hold down ⌘⌥ (Cmd+Opt) and press any key you want to associate with the app.

One of the advantages of static hotkeys is that they can even be used to launch applications that are not yet running. You can also specify whether repeating the hotkey will hide the app or cycle to any other apps with the same initials.

Optional application switcher GUI and window switching

rcmd is designed to be used entirely with keyboard shortcuts, but you do have the option to enable the GUI if desired. It appears when you hold down the right Cmd key, and you can choose from three visual layouts.

While the app is also capable of window switching, this will require Hammerspoon to be installed due to sandbox restrictions.

As an alternative to using Cmd+Tab, rcmd is recommended. It’s especially useful if you usually have a lot of apps open at the same time, as Cmd+Tab becomes very slow when you need to switch between more than two apps.
