You may or may not know it, but iTunes and the new Apple Music app allow you to rate the songs in your library. A surprisingly large number of users are unaware of this feature because it’s not very obvious and you have to go out of your way to actually rate songs.

Song Rating This feature was created to make the feature more accessible. With this app you can rate songs from the menu bar and see the rating of the current track. Plus, it comes with a simple but useful playback controller that also displays album art.

Rate a song from the menu bar

This app will work with the new Music app and the old iTunes, so users who haven’t upgraded to Catalina can use it as well. Still, you’re stuck with bloated iTunes, and song ratings won’t help you.

After launching the app, open Music or iTunes and start playing the song. If you haven’t rated it yet, you’ll see five little dots in the menu bar. Click on any of them to grant the track a certain number of stars. Alternatively, you can use customizable hotkeys to increase or decrease the rating.

It will be instantly visible when you play a rated song. If for some reason you rate a song directly in Music or iTunes, it will only show up in the song rating when you play the track again.

Simple playback controller and album art viewer

If you right-click on a song’s rating in the menu bar or use the global hotkey, a popup will appear with the track’s album art and information. With your cursor over it, you can also navigate between songs and play or pause music.

The mini player is even detachable, so you can move it anywhere else on your desktop. It will remain on top of all other windows but cannot be resized.

Make Apple Music and iTunes song ratings accessible

If you’ve never rated songs in your library before, song ratings might give you the motivation to get started. It’s a relatively simple app that works well, and it’s free to start. It even comes with a basic but useful album art viewer with playback controls.
