cod chess (before Dried cod) is a free, open-source macOS app that lets you play your own chess games on a virtual chessboard and view game analysis. Stockfish uses one of the most powerful chess engines (of the same name) to provide fast chess analysis.

The app provides on-the-spot advice on next steps. Once you take a move, Stockfish Chess calculates the best move and displays it on the board with a red arrow. If you don’t make the suggested move, the app will calculate the likelihood based on the last move.

The game board and pieces are beautifully designed and look great on any display, especially on retina-enabled devices. Additionally, Stockfish Chess can be played in full-screen mode, but only on OS X Lion or higher.

FEN strings can be copied to the clipboard and screenshots can even be saved as PNGs. As far as navigation is concerned, the application supports accessing the previous or next action and browsing the FEN string via the arrow keys.

If you want to stop your analysis and continue again, Stockfish Chess has you covered. You can save game state as a .pgn file and restore it later. Additionally, in the Preferences window, you can configure the analysis speed based on your Mac’s CPU.
