Developed by employees of the German Aerospace Center Institute for Transportation Systems, sumo wrestling (Urban Traffic Simulation) is a free, open-source, high-level utility that allows you to open and simulate large road network files.

View road networks and run simulations

Before proceeding, you should know that it only acts as a viewer. Although it includes some editing options, it does not have the ability to create or save modified road networks.

The interface is represented by a graphics window and a console window that must run simultaneously. Simulation and network files can be opened from the examples included in the installation directory.

Analyze data and customize options

Network parameters such as loading, waiting, departing, running and arriving vehicles, collisions, teleportation, start and end times, steps, simulation and idle durations, and duration factors can be checked.

Properties of various items can be edited from within the design, select which lanes you want to allow (e.g. private, emergency, authority, military, VIP, passenger, motorcycle), edit breakpoints, display internal structures and position intersections, edges, vehicles , TLS, points of interest, or polygons.

Start and stop simulations with one click. Additionally, you can enable game mode, instruct SUMO to exit at the end of the simulation, and disable textures. Keyboard shortcuts are supported.

Evaluation and Conclusion

We didn’t experience any stability issues in our testing, as the software tool didn’t freeze, crash, or indicate errors. It remains low on system resource consumption throughout runtime, running on low CPU and RAM.

Although SUMO does not have integrated options for creating road networks, it provides a user-friendly environment and advanced options for running simulations. It can be handled not only by advanced users, but also by amateurs who are curious about the road network.
