Minesweeper was promoted by Microsoft and eventually removed after the company included it in every version of Windows from 3.1 through Windows 8. It’s a very simple yet strangely addicting game that asks you to clear a field without clicking on any of the mines hidden below.

How to play

It’s all very simple. After starting the game, you need to click on a square. The chances of hitting mines are slim, but you have no way of knowing where they are yet, so if you’re really unlucky, start the game over.

However, if you clicked on an empty tile, an area should be cleared and some numbers will appear around the remaining tiles. These numbers indicate how many mines each empty plot was exposed to, and they should help you figure out where the rest are.

When you’re sure there’s a mine under the tile, go ahead and mark it by right-clicking. Once you’ve marked all mines and haven’t accidentally clicked on any, it’s game over.

Missing custom modes and personal scores

The original Windows version of the game also allowed users to create custom boards containing any number of blocks and mines. It makes it possible to generate extremely difficult or extremely easy games, but the macOS version does not include this feature.

Also, you can’t differentiate high scores based on who’s currently playing, so you can’t compare your best time with your friends’ if you’re playing on the same device.

Even if you’ve never heard of this game before, I recommend you give it a try. It’s a lot more interesting than it first appears, and definitely better than those bloated monsters in the Microsoft store. You might want to turn off the sound effects, though, as they can become annoying after a while.
