While modern cars often feature on-board computers to calculate mileage and predict travel costs, they are notoriously difficult to operate and not every car has them. Also, if you don’t want to get in the car just to plan your trip, the Mac app might be useful.

travel is an aptly named app that helps you perform any kind of calculation related to your car’s fuel consumption and upcoming trips. It’s primarily aimed at drivers in the US and UK, or other countries that use imperial units.

Calculate trip cost and MPG

If you know the fuel cost, your car’s MPG and the distance you need to travel, the app can calculate how much the trip will cost and how much fuel you will need to buy.

You also have separate calculators to determine how much fuel you need for a trip, how much fuel you can buy for a certain amount of money, and how far you can travel with it.

You can also quickly calculate your car’s MPG if you keep track of the amount of fuel you burn to drive a precise distance.

Need to support metric and other currencies

You can choose between imperial gallons and US gallons for calculations, and there’s a separate tool for converting between MPG and liters per 100 KM, MPG and miles per liter, and a few others.

However, the more commonly used units of countries that use the metric system are not chosen to perform any major calculations. That is, L/100 KM instead of MPG, Kilometers instead of Miles.

Also, since fuel costs need to be in cents or pence, rather than major units (dollars, pounds), it is difficult to use the app in countries where prices are not listed in these subunits.

Overall, Trip has the potential to be useful, but the calculations it performs aren’t particularly complex, and you can usually find them in other free apps and websites. Best of all, it’s only available in countries that use imperial measurements.
