YouTube Music is Google’s latest attempt to oust streaming giants Spotify and Apple Music, and the service could replace Google Play Music once all kinks are ironed out. One of the problems is the lack of a desktop player, but third-party solutions are already available.

Tencent Music Just create a wrapper to use as a dedicated desktop application to take full advantage of your existing YouTube Music web player. It allows you to use the service without a web browser and has some other advantages as well.

Essentially the same as the web player

As I’ve already mentioned, the developers just created a wrapper for the YouTube Music online player, so if you’re already familiar with the service, there’s hardly anything new from the desktop app.

If you don’t like web apps that take up browser tabs and don’t offer proper integration with your operating system, YT Music might be the way to go. What’s more, it comes with some extra features.

Media keys, shortcuts, Touch Bar controls and notifications

While some of these features are available in some browsers, they can be quite accidental. With this app you will be able to control playback with media keys and shortcuts, as well as liking or disliking songs with hotkeys.

MacBook Pro users will love the media controls added to the Touch Bar, and the app can also display notifications when switching tracks, along with a Notification Center widget.

Awesome unofficial YouTube music desktop player

Given Google’s preference for web apps, they’re unlikely to release a desktop player for their YouTube Music service anytime soon, if ever. Fortunately, YT Music works as well as you’d expect from a dedicated Mac app, so if you’re a fan of the streaming service, there’s no reason not to grab it.
