It allows software developers to publish programs directly from their own websites, while supporting features familiar from centralized distribution repositories such as shared libraries, automatic updates, and digital signatures. It is intended to complement, rather than replace, the operating system’s package manager. 0install packages never interfere with those provided by the distribution.

Zero Install does not define a new package format; unmodified tarballs or zip archives can be used. Instead, it defines an XML metadata format to describe these packages and the dependencies between them. A single metadata file can be used on multiple platforms (eg Windows, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, FreeBSD and Mac OS X).

Zero Install also has some interesting features not often found in traditional package managers. For example, while it will share libraries whenever possible, it can always install multiple versions of a package in parallel when there are conflicting requirements. Installation is always side-effect free (each package is extracted into its own directory and will not touch shared directories), making it ideal for use with sandboxing technologies and virtualization.

The XML file describing the program’s requirements can also be included in a source code repository, allowing full dependency management for unreleased developer versions. For example, a user can clone a Git repository and build and test the application, automatically downloading newer versions of libraries where necessary, without disturbing the versions of those libraries installed by their distribution, which continue to be used for other software.

What is new

Changes:

  • Add support for ARM64 (Bastian Eicher).
  • Add + to list of allowed characters in “extract” (Bastian Eicher, #185).

Bug Fixes:

  • Don’t abort if chmod in launcher directory fails.

  • It can sometimes fail if run in a sandbox that prevents changes to the file system.
  • Handle implementations that directly conflict with themselves (#180).
  • Improve SIGPIPE handling (#162).
  • Disable the SIGPIPE signal so we handle it as an exception instead, not by killing the process.

Updates for upstream changes:

  • Make compatible with Yojson json type deprecation (Marek Kubica).
  • Yojson 2.0 removes the json type, so this code switches to using t.
  • Replace use of deprecated Stdlib.Stream and Lwt_unix.yield.
  • Fix new compiler warnings from OCaml 4.12 and 4.13.
  • Update .NET Framework detection logic (Bastian Eicher, #178).
  • Simplify GUI building using dune’s new plugin support (#161).
  • Move feed to apps.0install.net (Bastian Eicher).
