Google Hangouts is a unified communications platform developed by Google to enable users to initiate and use communication channels such as text, voice, and video chats. You can integrate this desktop app with your Google+ and Gmail accounts to chat with people in your contact list. For mobility, the program is available on different platforms, namely Windows, Mac OS X, Android, iOS and web browsers. Google Hangouts for Mac is compatible with Mac 10.13 and later.

Opportunities

You will find that Google Hangouts has a simple interface. The home page is a directory of your latest messages and video calls. Above this is the add icon, which you can click to create a new hangout. The term “Hangout” means a conversation between you and another Google Hangout user/users. When you create a new video meeting, the program will display all your contacts. You can search for users by their username, email address, or mobile phone number.

Once you’ve selected the user or users you want to chat with, select the message or video call icon at the bottom of the page. Again on the main page there is a gear icon corresponding to the program settings. This allows you to customize your preferences such as friend requests, push notifications, and blocked users. You can also join a video meeting. Whether it’s public or private, you’ll see its current members organized according to who’s on your network and who’s not.

Google Hangouts broadcasts allow users who are not connected to the author to join. In these public hangouts, you will find profiles of people who are not associated with you or who are not associated with you in the participant list. The profile will display other personal information and an invitation to add or block this user. On the other hand, private hangouts allow friends to invite their friends into the conversation. For example, you create a video meeting with a select group of friends. Now that they have been invited to the group, they can also add other users.

Additional Applications

Apps in Google Hangouts are apps that you and your contacts can use during a video call. They range from collaboration tools, games, and filters. You can add and select Google Hangouts plugins by clicking the “+Add Applications” tab. This will provide you with the applications that the program offers. It is organized as Favorites and Recent tabs.

After selecting an application from the list, click “Add to this chat”. Please note that apps are not stored on your Google Hangouts account. This means that after you click the X or the close icon, the app will be disabled. If you want to apply the app to another hangout, you’ll find it under the Recent tab.
