Lantern is based on a “friends” system, and the app will connect to users who are up to 4 degrees away from you in the network. To create the connections, you need to sign in using your Gmail account, then add the email addresses of up to 6 trusted friends.

Via the Lantern Preferences, you can easily toggle the status of your application: you can either give or access the net. When using the Lantern network for access, you can manage the list of websites that you want to connect to through a proxy.

On the other hand, if you choose to become a Lantern Proxy, you can’t set any rules – it means other users can use your internet connection to access websites that might be illegal in your area.

User-friendly solution for granting or free internet access

Lantern gives you the ability to quickly access blocked websites, but that won’t keep you anonymous: the proxy server can see your IP, and you should still use HTTPS to encrypt your traffic.

To conclude, Lantern is a great tool for accessing blocked websites, but if protecting your identity is important, going with Tor is a better idea.
