Extracting only the sequence of interest from a large video recording can be quite tedious without the proper tools.

Lossless cut is a video editing tool that builds on the open source ffmpeg project to handle video decoding and aims to help you easily trim and cut unwanted video content from your recordings.

Video processing utility that relies on open source projects for decoding and playback

Right off the bat, LosslessCut scans your Mac to determine where your ffmpeg installation is. The process takes place in the background, so you are simply greeted by a minimalist window above which you have to drop the video you want to process.

Since LosslessCut relies on Chromium and HTML5 for playback, please note that you cannot work with all of the file formats supported by ffmpeg. However, the app can process popular formats, such as OGG, MP3, AAC, MP4, MOV, MKV, WAV, etc.

In the main window of LosslessCut, you can play the entire video and review its content. The application itself detects the video format (you can see it in the lower right corner of the main window) and also allows you to adjust the playback speed.

LosslessCut includes intuitive buttons to control playback: play and pause, skip to the start or end of the video, or skip back or forward a few frames. You can also see details about the playing time and you can use the slider to jump to a particular time.

Note that you can set the start and end time of the cutting process and then click the scissors button to perform the task. The output video will be exported to the desktop, but keep in mind that the original files remain intact.

Bottom line, LosslessCut reduces the video trimming and cropping process to simple actions – just load the video, preview the content, and trim the part you don’t need.

Note that LosslessCut can also take a screenshot of the current image: the image will be sent to your desktop as a JPG file.
