Ubuntu is the most popular free operating system, with over 75% of PC users currently using Ubuntu. Many people switch to Ubuntu because of its powerful software platform and user-friendly environment. While Ubuntu offers everything you would expect from a modern operating system, it does have a few weaknesses that limit its usefulness for some applications. A final analysis of the two operating systems will show which one has more potential as a powerful alternative to Windows.

Ubuntu also suffers from a lack of hardware support for several major Microsoft programs. The Windows Subsystem for Linux was designed to run applications from the POSIX Window OS, and this feature works very well with the Microsoft Front Page software package. Most of my testing of Windows 10 on a laptop was also bad. It seems that if you want all the power of Windows but don’t need all the bells and whistles of WINE, then the best solution would be to use another distribution like Ubuntu that offers the full functionality of Windows without the drawbacks that limit Ubuntu’s usefulness.

For developers and programmers, Ubuntu’s biggest problem is the licensing structure. Ubuntu is considered an open source operating system, and as a result, any software developed using the original Linux kernel environment should be free from patent restrictions. With no licensing issues, you also don’t have to worry about Canonical or their developers raising money to develop new software products. While this may seem bad at first for those who depend on paid software, paying for a license to use a program is less important than having a free program for developing new software.
