The Reds pulled out the Wallabies block Izack Rodda and two other players for refusing to accept the pay cuts agreed to by the players' union in a seasonal halt due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Rodda, winger Isaac Lucas and the Harry Hockings lock have been removed after discussions with the players and their agent, the Super Rugby club announced on Monday.

The Reds said players "were unwilling" to accept pay cuts and be nominated for the federal government's JobKeeper program, which pays workers $ 1,500 (£ 797) biweekly if their employers fire them because of COVID-19. .

"Unfortunately, we had to make the decision to remove three of our players," said Queensland Rugby Union chief executive David Hanham.

"Given the recent negotiated deal to cut player wages, this was not a situation QRU expected."

Last month, the players' union and Rugby Australia agreed on an interim payment agreement, which provided for average wage cuts of 60% until the end of September.

Anthony Picone, the Reds' three-player agent, was unable to provide immediate comment.

Rugby Australia director Scott Johnson said the governing body wanted players to stay in Australia and honor their contracts.

"We are aware that they are analyzing their legal position, but we hope this can be resolved with the players as soon as possible and we will maintain an open dialogue with them," said Johnson.

Super Rugby was suspended in March after travel restrictions and border controls put in place to contain the COVID-19 made the competition unsustainable.

Under heavy financial pressure, Rugby Australia hopes to follow New Zealand's lead by hosting a national tournament with the country's four Super Rugby teams to generate income.
