PlayStation 5 overtakes Xbox Series X in UK sales charts for November 2020

Sony may be struggling to keep up with demand for the PlayStation 5, but that didn’t stop the console from dominating UK sales last month. According to Games Industry, the new console has beaten both the Xbox Series X and the Nintendo Switch.

A total of 900,000 consoles were sold in the UK between 1 and 28 November. Most were PlayStation 5 consoles. That meant the Nintendo Switch moved in for second place for the third time in the past two years. Such high sales figures are really expected for a month in which two new consoles will be launched. November 2020 was a more successful month than November 2013 for revenue generated from console sales; the latter was when the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were released, of course.

The number of console accessories sold also increased by 61.4%. Between October 25 and November 21, gamers purchased 1.25 million accessories, with the PlayStation dominating the top 10. The best-selling accessory during this period was the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. The Pulse 3D headset came in second. Third place went to the PlayStation 4 DualShock controller, which topped the list the previous month. Other accessories in the top 10 were the PS5 Media Remote in seventh place and the DualSense charging station in eighth place. The PS5 HD camera missed a spot in the top 10 entering at number 11.

In terms of games, Call of Duty: Cold War Black Ops took the first place. This was followed by Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Yes FIFA 21. Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales came fourth. This title sold more copies on PlayStation 5 than on PlayStation 4. It was also the biggest PS5 launch title in the UK, at least in terms of physical sales. Unfortunately, the game table only considers the sale of boxed copies. Digital sales occupied a much larger share of the market than ever before, but 2.38 million games were still sold during the period.

With all PlayStation 5 inventory currently out of stock, it seems unlikely that the console will retain the top spot next month. Sony is promising more PS5 inventory in time for Christmas, but with the Nintendo Switch, the latter is more likely to return to number one in December.
