Sales of Marvel’s Avengers have yet to generate a profit for Square Enix


In announcing its financial results for the first half of the fiscal year ended March 31, 2021, Square Enix revealed that Marvel avengersInitial sales fell short of expectations and the game has yet to turn a profit.

President Yosuke Matsuda partly blamed the costs associated with a “major” launch marketing campaign, saying Square Enix expects to recoup the costs in the second half of the fiscal year. The publisher expects sales to pick up when it offers “extended additional content” in the future.

“In addition to the amortization of the development costs of this game, another important factor associated with the title was the fact that we undertook a significant advertising campaign at the time of its launch to compensate for the delays in our marketing efforts resulting from COVID. 19 pandemic, ”Matsuda told investors. “There is still a certain amount of development costs to amortize in the third quarter, but we want to recover them by increasing our sales in the future.”

When asked what Square Enix expects Marvel avengers profitability to look like in the third quarter, Matsuda said the company is focusing first on expanding sales.

Elsewhere, Matsuda was asked if Square Enix could have been better prepared Marvel avengers launch, for which he said the publisher had “a lot of preparation,” but there were areas where he could have done better. “We intend to use the lessons we learned from this experience in future game development efforts,” he added. However, Matsuda did not say what Square Enix thinks he could have done better and what lessons he learned.
