Scorn developer says biggest difference for next generation is not storage, but processors


Scorn director Ljubomir Peklar acknowledges that despite all the talk about solid state storage, the integrated processor on each console will decide the real game change for next generation hardware.

Scorn, currently in development at Ebb Studios, was originally intended to be designed as a pair of Xbox Series X games (these plans have since been confirmed to be discontinued, and Scorn will be released as a story which can be played from start to finish).

In a recent interview with MSPowerUserPeklar explained the reasoning behind Ebb's decision to prepare for the next generation.

"We didn't want to (want to bring Scorn to the current generation) because we want our game to play at 60 frames per second," said Peklar. "It would be almost impossible without great sacrifices. Peklar suggested that the capabilities of the next generation will be largely defined by the CPUs.

"Everyone is promoting SSD as the next big thing, and yes, SSDs will be a big help in loading and moving assets," said Peklar. “But the biggest culprit that creates problems in the current generation is the CPU. This is where the biggest difference will come from the current generation. "

Scorn was first shown during last week's Inside Xbox game reveal, which was controversial to say the least. Originally labeled as a game showcase, the event mainly included a range of pre-rendered images not too far from a standard launch trailer.

"Microsoft has had some messaging problems," said Peklar. "People expected that several million triple-A production games would display next-generation images and, most importantly, game displays."
