As a multi-meat fanatic, I always check burgers, steaks, and other grilled snacks with a portable thermometer to check doneness. Until ThermoWorks SignalsI haven’t been able to find a product that acts like a kind of tender meat, something that controls multiple foods at once. It’s not a new device, but this particular version is updated with wifi and bluetooth and after cooking a few meals with it I can say it’s a solid update for the popular pen type portable thermometers from domestic rotisseries.

The device itself consists of a four-panel LCD display that can be attached to metal surfaces with magnets on the back of the display. Theoretically, you could stick it on your grill, but you shouldn’t (more on that in a second). Still, the magnets mean it’s easy to stick on your fridge or even the side of an oven if you’re using it indoors.

Connect multiple probes, whether it’s a thinner internal probe or a thicker air probe that measures room temperature, and connect the device to your phone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. app included

It gives you instant access to each temperature and you can set alarms and timers both on the signals themselves and on your phone.

ThermoWorks designed the system to be a portable monitoring station that allows you to keep tabs on everything in your cook at once. The main unit is waterproof, although you’ll probably want to take it with you after cooking to avoid possible sun damage. It withstands temperatures between 32 and 122 ° F, which means it can survive outdoors in summer, but not winter, and you shouldn’t place it directly on your hood. That being said, you can easily roll the probes around the grill area to transmit them to the device and keep it nearby.

And speaking of probes, while mine came with an ambient air probe and an internal probe, ThermoWorks makes a decent variety of probes. Most are designed to withstand temperatures up to 700 ° F. But if a probe fails due to heat damage or bad bending caused by too many times in the oven or over the grill, you can replace it for $ 18. ThermWorks even sells a power cord. extension for the probes themselves. In case you need more length.

I tried the signals while grilling burgers and steak at around 350 ° F. Grill Traeger It recently stopped streaming over wifi which made this device especially interesting for me. But I imagine it’s even better if you’re working with a simpler gas or charcoal grill without high-end tech features. This holiday season, adding this to your outdoor kitchen makes perfect sense. (Even if it would be so bad to use it in your indoor kitchen too?)

The range of the device was pretty solid, even through the brick walls of our house in Brooklyn. Usually the biggest problem with many of these devices is signal deterioration through walls and grass. But I have a fairly robust wifi signal outside and it worked fine. If you have any, that should work for you too. However, it should be noted that this only works with 802.11b / g / n on the 2.4 GHz band. If your Wi-Fi setting is 5 GHz only, it will get stuck on Bluetooth 4.2 for app compatibility. .

For really long fumes, you’ll want to do a bit of planning as ThermoWorks Signal lasts 16 hours on a single charge. It’s disappointing when you compare it to ThermoWorks pens, which can last for years of use. But the signal is also rechargeable via USB-C and in a very, REALLY long smoke, you can plug it in if you need to.

And that’s part of the beauty of a thermometer like signals. It is flexible and can be used for a wide variety of uses. It’s great for smoking and grilling outdoors, but it doubles as an oven monitor, allowing you to keep an eye on turkey, sides, and desserts while sipping your punch. Given the importance of making sure everything is at the right temperature, this is a great kitchen appliance for this holiday season.
