The Los Angeles Fire Department has reportedly said that a dozen firefighters are "down". They are also said to have declared the fire to be a major emergency with 230 firefighters on the scene.

Local news networks broadcast live footage of firefighters on the rooftops of Los Angeles buildings.

Large numbers of fire trucks have been placed on the streets surrounding the buildings.

The burning buildings are in the toy district of downtown Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Fire Department announced on Twitter that Captain Scott would be giving a preliminary interview shortly.

NBC Los Angeles reported that 10 firefighters were injured as a result of the multiple fires.

The fire became a "major emergency" around 9:36 p.m. EST (2:36 a.m. BST) with an explosion reported at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Around 10:00 p.m. ET (3:00 a.m.BST), more than 230 firefighters reportedly responded to the fire.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, firefighters had taken a defensive stance to attack the fire.

Vehicles from the Los Angeles Police Department were also seen at the scene.

It is not known how many victims there are, but most of the flames appear to have been extinguished.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the 10 injured firefighters were found and transported to local hospitals.

They added that police sources said that at least two firefighters had suffered serious injuries.
