Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings is a real-time strategy video game set in the Middle Ages, especially the Dark Age, Feudal Age, Middle Ages and Renaissance. You will advance through the eras in chronological order, collecting resources, creating cities and building armies capable of overthrowing rival empires. Entering a new era allows you to own more armies or units, structures, and technologies, but also places you in an important historical event.

Gameplay

The main goal of Age of Empires II is to get as much food, wood, gold, and stone as possible for your civilization. As a commander, you can order your villagers or civilian units to pick them up. Finding these resources is easy. Food is the easiest to get, as there are many places where you can hunt and harvest. You can also create a self-sustaining village by ordering them to take care of livestock and set up a farm.

Owning several farms provides the villagers not only with food, but also with wood. Cutting down trees is the only way to harvest wood. There are also several ways to get gold. It is easiest to trade or collect relics in the monastery, but this can drain your other resources. It is best to send the villagers to the mines to collect gold and stones. All of your resources should be placed at checkpoints such as city centers, mining camps, mills, and sawmills.

Villagers can be promoted from workers to merchants in the market. You must use the resources you have to create a market for civilians to sell wood, stone, gold and food. In addition to being a place to trade items, the market and docks allow you to get gold from overseas markets or ports. Please note that the longer the supplier has traveled, the more expensive it is. You can invest in this offer and sell it on your market for a higher price.

Units and Civilizations

Units are the villagers that inhabit your civilization. Each city has a limit on the number of people that can populate it. Depending on the number of houses, castles and city centers in one area, the maximum number of inhabitants can be between 25 and 200 inhabitants. The limit lets you know how many residents you manage. For example, the idle resident button shows how many residents have not yet been assigned a task.

There are five campaigns in four centuries that highlight historical scenarios such as Genghis Khan’s invasion of Eurasia, Barbarossa’s crusade, and Saladin’s defense of the Holy Land. You can immerse yourself in the game when playing alone, or take over cities faster when playing with friends. Knowing how many residents you manage, you will be able to correctly distribute tasks or activities between them.

The key occupation in the “Age of Kings” is military affairs. You can assign residents to one of five military units: archers, cavalry, infantry, naval units and siege weapons. Each unit has its own counter unit. For example, infantry have pikemen and spearmen at the ready when they are up against cavalry. This means that only the unit will receive attack bonuses.
