Switching focus from one running application to another is one of the most common actions among computer users. In Windows, this is easily done with the ALT-Tab combination, which displays a simple dialog showing previews of all windows. Designed to give users more control, Alt-Tab terminator Replaces the default Alt-Tab dialog with an enhanced preview window with task management.

Replacement of ALT-Tab and Win-Tab dialogs

The Alt-Tab window is only visible when you press the above key combination, but you can focus it using the Alt-Tab Terminator’s tray menu. By default, it’s set to a medium size, but you can also make it larger, smaller, or turn on full-screen mode.

Despite the name, you should know that Alt-Tab Terminator can also be configured to replace the Win-Tab key combination, which switches between tasks on different desktops in Windows.

Switch between open windows and manage tasks

All open windows are placed in the task list, allowing quick navigation using the keyboard’s dedicated keys.

Unlike the default Windows ALT-Tab dialog which only shows window previews, Alt-Tab Terminator shows a preview of the entire desktop and application names. In Lite mode, the latter is not displayed, and Alt-Tab Terminator only displays an icon in the vertical task list, making it easier to find the window you are looking for.

The app also has basic task management options, enabling you to close windows, force kill its process, or run it with focus. Also, you can use the F4 key to close open windows without switching focus.

Not just focus switching, but also task management

Alt-Tab Terminator provides an interesting alternative to Windows’ Alt-Tab dialog, combining two functions – window switching and task management – into one application. In fact, it offers more control over open windows, but only basic task management features are available. The app is only available for Windows 7 and above, but if you’re still using Windows Vista you can try VistaSwitcher, while XP users can download TaskSwitchXP. Both are predecessors of the Alt-Tab Terminator.
