Journal is what it’s called, and it’s a beautifully designed app for macOS. It offers you a convenient, intuitive way to jot down thoughts for any day with Markdown formatting, tags, and easy browsing.

One thing’s for sure – it looks great

While it’s not always the most important factor, a beautiful UI design can go a long way in attracting users, and Journal has absolutely no shortage of it. The app’s design is modern and minimal, with a few optional themes and no distracting visual elements.

While writing, you can see nothing on the screen except the text, the date, and any labels you may have added. Formatting options are available when selecting text, and you can expand the sidebar for easier navigation between daily entries.

Formatting and prompting

Journal supports Markdown. If you use Markdown syntax, the application will format it automatically, or you can just select some text and choose from the available formatting options. It allows you to add headings and lists, change text styles, add code blocks, and highlight words or phrases.

Sometimes you just can’t think of what to write about a given day. If this is the case, this app can help you by giving you some helpful hints on what to reflect on.

Cloud sync and encryption

To use Journal, you must be signed in with an Apple or Google account. Log in to still use the app offline, and your data will sync when you’re back online. If you share a computer and are concerned about privacy, make sure to remember to log off when you’re done writing for the day.

All data stored locally is encrypted, which is good because we’re dealing with personal thoughts that you probably don’t want to share with anyone else.

Overall, Journal is a great take on a modern digital journal. It’s easy to use and looks the part, the only downside is its Electron-based architecture and subscription model.
